The Porto Digital project aimed to broaden the use of the Internet by the citizens of the city of Porto. It aspired to boost the quality in education, particularly through an increased use of information and communication technologies (ICT) on all levels of education; to reduce bureaucracy and increase efficiency of the city council services; to decrease the number of information-deprived people, particularly those with social problems; and to contribute to a better quality of life in the urban area for inhabitants, workers and tourists.
The focus of the SmartImpact project is cities, people and the promotion of smart, sustainable development. The network is supported by the Fraunhofer Institute, a leading research group and authority on smart cities. Along with development of a model for smart cities, the ten partners are working to develop action plans to make their own cities smarter. SmartImpact aims to explore and develop innovation management tools for municipalities, which are needed to finance, build, manage, operate and maintain smart city solutions.
